Running In the Rain
Why do I love running in the rain?
I mean, really, really love it?
Example. On a recent warm summer morning, I was set to meet a couple of friends for an easy 1 hour recovery run.
As has been my new habit, I got there about 45 minutes early to do a long warm up and my Rosary/prayer time before I began my run with them.
I didn’t look at the weather report (I rarely do in the summer) before I headed out and as I pulled up to the parking lot it began to drizzle.
I was happy!
I began my run and actually was feeling pretty bad physically. I had run a hard 11 miles the day before (more running than I am used to on my runs, i.e., a flat course) and my body was not recovered. For the first 20 minutes or so I did my Rosary and was actually hoping the guys didn’t show up so I could cut my run down to 45 minutes.
My legs felt flat, I was slipping all over the place and could not get any sort of rhythm and my spirit was just not into it.
Then it all changed.
I went back to my car, dropped off my hat and shirt (it was warm) and got my music.
Did I mention it was pouring?
My first steps away from the car and I was a new man. I cranked up the music and felt totally alive and in the moment.
Running in the rain, especially in nature is so calming, cleansing and feels great on my body. I think a combination of the cooling effect of the rain and the fact that it feels even more like an adventure makes it a great connection time for me.
Normally there is no one out there with me when it rains like this, just a few “die hards” like myself.
This day was very different.
There were a ton of people out, probably because the rain started later in the morning and they were already out running when it started.
One of the hardest things to do is start a run (especially when it is cold) when it is already raining. Leaving a warm, safe and comfortable car just doesn’t seem like the sane thing to do.
Again, probably why I love it so much.
I continued my run and met at the designated time and designated place and, surprise, surprise.
No one was there.
I was not upset.
Remember when I said I was going to cut my run short based on how I felt in the first 20 minutes?
This all changed.
I filled up my water bottle and headed out to what ended up being a 1 hour and 50 minute great run.
All because of the rain.
And because I stuck it out even when things felt terrible.
Good thing to remember and a good prayer is that:
“Things almost never always get worse”
Think about that for a minute the next time you hit that snooze.
Or stay in the car and go for coffee instead of running in the rain.
What wonderful feelings, prayer time, alone time and connection with God and nature I would have missed if I followed the easy and “normal” road this day.
